Retrospectives are a team activity. During those invaluable meetings for achieving continuous improvement, you express your joys and struggles, and define as team action items that can improve your process.

In ScatterSpoke, the data you gather can be exported and imported into the platform easily. We already covered how to export retro data in a dedicated guide.

Stay until the end to experience the process of importing retrospectives.

Use Cases

Having the ability to import retrospective data is valuable in a couple of ways.

If you have been using another platform for running virtual retrospectives, the import functionality gives you the opportunity to migrate your past retrospective data to ScatterSpoke and keep it for further analysis in the future.

On the other hand, you can create brand new retrospectives in ScatterSpoke, by importing the retro board layout you wish to apply. This would be useful to anyone who has a preferred board structure that is not available as a template on the platform and doesn’t want to spend time building a custom retro board from scratch.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough of the Importing Process

The process of importing retros in ScatterSpoke is extremely simple and takes no more than a few minutes to complete from the beginning.

To initiate it, go to the Team/Organization dashboard and click on the purple button labeled “Create retrospective’.

After the dropdown menu appears, click on “Import Retrospective. The following pop-up will require you to select a CSV file to upload. In case you are wondering how to structure the data inside, there is a sample available at the top.

After you’ve selected the file you wish to import, it is important to specify if the first row serves as a header and indicate to ScatterSpoke to skip it, when importing the data if this is the case. When you’ve made your choice, just click “Next”.

The next step of the importing process is to map the columns in your uploaded CSV file to ScatterSpoke fields. They will appear as a list with dropdown options available for each column.

There are 7 options to choose from:

  • Retrospective name*

  • Retrospective date*

  • Column name*

  • Card text*

  • Votes on the card

  • Group Anchor

The options with a * next to them are mandatory, so the system won’t let you proceed forward until all starred fields are mapped. When done, click “Next”.

The following window summarizes the data you are about to import. To conclude the process, just click on the purple namesake button.

That’s it, in a few seconds the imported retro data will become available on your Dashboard and you’ll be able to access it from there.
